WASHINGTON and PHILADELPHIA, June 1, 2012 — Project Nur, a student-led initiative of the American Islamic Congress, today announced a partnership with Cinémathèque Internationale of Philadelphia to screen an insightful documentary film, “Veiled Voices,” on Sunday, June 10, 2012 from at 6:30 pm. The screening will occur at L’Etage @ Beau Monde located on 624 South 6th St., Philadelphia, PA 19147.
In this documentary, three influential women Islamic leaders are profiled—along with their families and the communities in which they serve. Filmed over the course of two years, “Veiled Voices” reveals a world rarely documented, exploring both the public and private lives of these women. The film depicts these women’s struggles for equal rights within their religious tradition and highlights their achievements regarding this issue.
Brigid Maher, the director of the documentary, will attend the screening to participate in Q & A session with the audience.
“Veiled Voices” is distributed by Typecast Releasing in the United States and has screened on over 150 public television stations and three national networks. Al Jazeera Network recently acquired the film for broadcast in the Middle East and North Africa. The film has additional international distribution through TVF International and has screened in numerous international festivals in the United States and abroad. Maher won a Fulbright Senior Award to teach broadcast media in Lebanon in the spring of 2005.
